Experience in Long-term

Content of the report

This year, for the first time I participated in the RJE3 program. I got this opportunity because of the collaboration between my home university and Hokkaido University. For 5 days, we had several lectures related to environment, culture, and sustainable development especially in the Far East and Arctic regions. Not only lectures, almost every day after lecture, we also participated in tours organized by the organizers, such as university tour, laboratory tour, and city tour. Getting to know about Japanese culture, especially the city of Sapporo was an amazing experience

Learning outcomes

During the program,I learned many things about the Arctic. Natural conditions, culture inherent in indigenous people, plans for developing the economic value of the arctic region, and also issues related to environmental problems. Many participants who came from various backgrounds and various countries, made the discussion to discuss each problem more interesting because there were more opinions and ideas to help solve the existing problems. Every opinion and idea that we discuss every day, must be presented in front of everyone so as to improve our public speaking skills.

The beauty of Sapporo

During my stay in Sapporo, I got a lot of new things, one of which was to sort out the garbage we have before throwing it into the trash. In my opinion, this is a small thing that has a big impact on environmental sustainability. Surprised when I realized that almost all corners of the city of Sapporo were not found trash and also trash, it seems that Japanese people are very accustomed to protecting the environment. That makes me want to implement it in Indonesia. The beauty of Sapporo is also so captivating. The neat layout of the city, the well-preserved museum building, and the hospitality of Sapporo citizens to foreigners, really helped us for doing somethings.

Influence on future career goals and choices

After participating in this program, the most important thing is increasing our relations with many people who are spread in various countries. Ofcourse this is very useful for careers in the future, because that way we can still share information and ideas with each other even though different locations and types of jobs. The knowledge gained from students from Russia, Japan, Finland, Hungary, China also enriched insights on culture, economics, and handling environmental problems in each country. Henceforth, as an ecology and environmental management faculty student, I want to continue learning from anyone so that once I return to Indonesia, I can contribute to the country.
