Summary This course will focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are international goals for a sustainable and better world by 2030, as stated in the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” unanimously adopted by member countries at the UN Summit in September 2015. SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) are the international goals for a sustainable and better world by 2030. The SDGs cover a wide range of global issues, from the environment, resources, energy, health and sanitation, to education, labor, industry, human rights, and the realization of fairness, all of which require the cooperation of the entire global community. The lecture will start with the flow from MDGs to SDGs, the position of SDGs in CSV management, and the essence of inclusive. The lecture will be followed by an introduction to the differences in the current status of the SDGs between Japan and other countries, and an exercise on how we can tackle them. We will also discuss ESG investment, energy issues, and environmental ethics.

Summary The program aims to develop the ability of students to identify and set specific issues and to consider solutions by themselves through PBL based on SDG topics that aim to solve various problems faced by an increasingly diverse and complex international society. In addition, international students from all over the world are expected to participate in the PBL and work together to develop their international collaboration skills.
In this course, we invite Mr. Noriyuki Sawa, a world-renowned Puppetry Artist, Theatre Director living in the Czech Republic, to explore the expression of global issues in a non-verbal form through the creation of object theater, in which objects (objects) are made to perform in a theatrical manner.

Summary The program aims to develop the ability of students to identify and set specific issues and to consider solutions by themselves through PBL based on SDG topics that aim to solve various problems faced by an increasingly diverse and complex international society. In addition, international students from all over the world are expected to participate in the PBL and work together to develop their international collaboration skills.
In this course, students will present global issues and proposed solutions using imitation papers and PowerPoint presentations. Students will work in groups to create presentations that focus on language expression.

Summary Based on the characteristics of the OGGs Program, an educational program implemented in collaboration with partner universities in three regions, students will recognize the unique challenges in each region and understand the existence of common global challenges. In addition, they will learn about the current status and future direction of efforts to solve these issues. Lectures will provide an opportunity for students to think about how to solve global issues through international collaboration toward the realization of the SDGs and global sustainability.

Summary The global population is expanding at the bottom of the wealth pyramid. Increased poverty leads to urbanization with enhanced human activity, which in turn causes resource depletion, greater environmental impacts, increased food shortages and deterioration of public sanitation, resulting in more poverty. This course will focus on the linkages between human activities and the environment in the above PARE (Populations-Activities-Resources-Environments) chain.
Students discuss and propose solutions to issues related to PARE that are covered in the “SDGs Internship/Field study: Summer School in Japan (PARE) ” course. The main objective is for students to improve their ability to discuss with other students from different countries, cultures and disciplines/fields in English, and to better organize and summarize their ideas.

Summary This course consists of lectures and practical training. It’s held in Indonesia or Thailand in February or March as a spring school. The goal is to acquire the ability to grasp and purify the actual situation of various problems in ASEAN (sanitation/nutritional conditions, environmental problems, fossil energy/metal/water, land, and marine resource use) and to propose solutions. In the lectures, students will learn about the local conditions, survey methods, resource management, field survey/sample acquisition methods, and sample analysis methods. Practical exercises also include sample acquisition, analysis and interpretation. It takes about two weeks, including days to move between Japan and Indonesia or Thailand and days off. The schedule gives enough time for preparation and review. It may be useful for the students who wish to engage in research or technology development related to the sustainable use of fossil energy, metals, water, land, and marine resources as researchers and engineers in the future.

Summary The OGGs-NJE3 course aims to develop experts who can be expected to play an active role in the Northern Region by acquiring cross-disciplinary knowledge and expertise in specific fields in order to solve important issues in the northern region. In this SDGs Internship/Field study, you can learn about regional development and Building Environmental Design directly related to the issues of the cold northern region through classes collaboration with the facluty member from partner universities.
This year, Professor Ivo MARTINAC, an expert in building energy field from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, will be invited to conduct study tours and workshops.

Summary Sapporo city and the suburban area hold a lot of traces of indigenous people’s life and several museums which exhibit and preserve historic remains and historical sources. You can learn the history of indigenous people and emigration, settlement, and reclamation of Japanese people (Wajin), and also traces of the achievement of economic development in the prewar and post war time in the central area of Hokkaido through to observe historical resources including remains and documents.
You can learn through above mentioned activity by explanation and guidance in English under the cooperation of visiting museums.
You can understand the outline of the history of Hokkaido through learning the history of Sapporo and central area of Hokkaido.
This course offers the basic knowledge to become a mediator between Hokkaido and participants’ mother country continuously in future.

Summary This practicum, in collaboration with the International Arctic Research Center (IARC) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), will consist of a summer or winter stay in Alaska, lectures and fieldwork in English, fieldwork in Fairbanks and the surrounding area, and group work on a mini research project. The goals of the course are as follows.
Students will deepen their understanding of the Arctic environment, including the atmosphere, oceans, land surfaces, and ecosystems, as well as the lifestyle and societies of the arctic region and ethnic minorities.
Students will form groups and work together with members from different fields and cultural backgrounds to discover and solve problems.

Summary Through joint lectures conducted in cooperation with partner universities, students will learn about the history, language, and art of the Northern Region and Slavic countries.
*This course is scheduled to be held every other year after the 2023 academic year.
First, students will attend interdisciplinary lectures on the Northern Region across disciplines at the University of Helsinki in Finland, and then move to Sofia University in Bulgaria to deepen their study of the Slavic countries. The participants will also visit museums and art galleries located near university.

Summary In this field study, students enter the host laboratory of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) alone and conduct research and survey activities to solve problems by setting specific themes. The purpose of this internship is for students with limited research experience to acquire international teamwork research skills by participating as a member in a teamwork research project. Through discussions in English with the research group’s supervisor and leader students, students will develop a foundation of international research skills.

Summary Under the guidance of their host supervisor, students undertake research and investigative activities to solve problems by setting specific themes.
The aim of this “Independent Research Experience on STSI Ⅰ(OGGs-STSI)” is for students with little research experience to acquire international teamwork research skills by participating as members in a teamwork research project. Through discussions in English with research group supervisors and leader students, the foundation of international research skills will be developed.
Students are also permitted to take other HSI courses during this Independent Study on STSI to the extent that it does not affect their research activities, enabling a comprehensive experience of the Hokkaido University’s educational and research activities.
This course is mandatory for participants of the OGGs-STSI course, whose objective is to develop human resources who can maximise the results of teamwork between Japanese and Indian personnel in tackling various issues related to the establishment of a Sustainable Transportation System and Infrastructure (STSI) in India.
