Experience in Long-term

Introduction

In this report, I am writing about my participation at the RJE3 Basic Subjects “Introduction to Far East and Arctic Studies RJE3”. The aim of the course was to acquaint Russian, Japanese, and Chinese students with sustainable development of the Far East and the Arctic. We had some lectures and seminars in Hokkaido University and made presentations on the topics covered by lecturers. During this program we listened to a presentations made by Russian and Japanese experts. The main topics of this course are culture, environment, infrastructure development, and politics. During this week, I have learned a lot about the sustainable development of the Far East and the Arctic.

Learning outcomes

My major is Area Studies, and I think that better understanding of environmental, economic and social processes will be helpful in my future work. Previously I was very briefly introduced to Japanese experts’ point of view on the global challenges, and it was very interesting to attend these classes.

I am interested in international relations, so the information that Japan has extensive international contacts and encourages researchers work together on global issues is inspiring and promising in my opinion. Japan’s research organizations work in very different areas, and have many options to develop joint programs with my home republic. For example, Yakutia is known for its extreme weather conditions, and therefore research organizations could test equipment for the Japan’s Arctic stations and base the joint research programs with Russian experts. It was nice to hear that Japan’s experts hope that during its future Arctic Council Chairmanship the Russian Federation will concern on the joint scientific researches with other Arctic and non-Arctic countries.

I am sincerely impressed by all innovations Hokkaido researches and officials have created to make people’s life comfortable and convenient. It was very interesting to know about the urban integration and revitalization program on population reducing city, and about the waste management and energy recovery programs.
