From September 21st-28th, “SDGs Field study: Regional Design in North (NJE3)” was held in Finland and Sweden. Two faculty members from the Graduate School of Engineering and 16 students from Hokkaido University participated in this field study.
During the first 4 days, the participants stayed in Finland. On the second day, they stayed at Hyytiälä Forest Station, a research facility of the University of Helsinki. Lecturers from VTT Technical Research Centre, the University of Helsinki, and Hokkaido University delivered valuable lectures to the students at the Viikki Campus of the University of Helsinki. On another day, they went on an excursion in the city of Helsinki and visited several places, including the Oodi city library.
Participants traveled from Finland to Sweden by overnight ferry. For the other 4 days, they stayed in Stockholm. They attended lectures by Professor Ivo at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and participated in a research exchange with KTH researchers and students (Poster session). They also participated in a campus tour of KTH and visited the U-Building (KTH Live-in Lab), as well as explored the city of Stockholm.
Through this field study, students deepened their understanding of architectural design and technologies in cold region countries, also their culture. It was a valuable opportunity to broaden their research perspectives.
