Lecture RJE3

SDGs Field Study: Arctic Exercise (University of Alaska Fairbanks) was held.

For 11 days, from August 31 to September 10, the course “SDGs Field study: Arctic Exercise: Atmosphere, Oceans and Land Environment and Society (NJE3)” was held at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). Four faculty members from the Arctic Research Center and the Field Science Center for Northern Biosphere of Hokkaido University, the National Institute of Polar Research, and the International Arctic Research Center (IARC) at UAF, along with 12 students, participated in the course.

The participants attended lectures delivered by faculty members from UAF and IARC, visited the University of Alaska Museum of the North, and participated in the Chena Indian Village Riverboat Tour. Through these activities, they gained knowledge of Alaska’s public policy, history, and Indigenous peoples.

The participants also took part in fieldwork at Castner Glacier, visited a permafrost site, and conducted fieldwork at the Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR). Through these practicums, they deepened their understanding of Alaska’s natural environment.

Toward the end of the field study, each group discussed and analyzed the knowledge and data obtained through the PFRR fieldwork and delivered a presentation on the final day.

With the support of local Japanese researchers and UAF students, participants gained an interdisciplinary understanding of the natural environment, lifestyles, and culture of northern Alaska.
