During my studies in the NJE3 program, I had the opportunity to expand my knowledge both in the field of my studies and in completely new spheres for me, while also gaining experience in an international environment and improving my language skills.

During the summer courses I learned many things about Sustainable Development Goals and the different approaches that we can take towards a better life for both humankind and the planet. The classes were interactive, and I met a lot of people from different cultural backgrounds.

The classes that I chose to study during the semester were connected mostly to culture, tourism and international relations. I had prior knowledge of some of the topics we covered, but it was extremely helpful to hear the perspectives of people from different parts of the world.

As a second-year Japanese studies student, my main subject of study is Japanese culture and language, but until my participation in the OGGs program, my interest had not been sufficiently directed towards the Ainu people. I can say that my stay in Hokkaido allowed me to immerse myself in a less known culture. I visited a lot of museums and had the opportunity to meet Ainu people, who still keep the customs and practice traditional crafts. The folk tales and songs truly fascinated me.

I was extremely interested in learning more about how tourism affects local society and the preservation of traditional ways of life and culture. Moreover, the problems of overtourism in urban environments and depopulating rural areas is a global phenomenon and it was nice to learn about effective practices being implemented in Japan to improve sustainable tourism.

What is more, coming from a non-Northern country, I didn’t know much about the Arctic people’s situation and politics. As I have an interest in international relations, these lectures gave me a good idea of how local difficulties can have a global impact.

The teachers were great and really managed to create a beneficial and enjoyable learning environment. Teamwork was extremely important for every task we had, and this is very useful for the future work environment that each of us will find ourselves in.

Apart from the study, I also had the chance to travel and visit a number of natural, historical, and cultural sites, both in Hokkaido and on the island of Honshu. I got to experience different aspects of traditional Japanese culture in the most authentic ways. This experience was extremely enriching both professionally and personally. The knowledge gained during this period will be useful for my future research. I recommend the program to anyone who wants to broaden their horizons and create international contacts. If I had the chance, I would repeat the whole experience all over again. I advise future participants to prepare in advance – both academically and culturally – and to make the most of the opportunities that OGGs and NJE3 offer.
